Choose a Kagawa udon-making experience by how much of the trip you are willing to let it own. Nakano Udon School in Kotohira is a roughly 50-minute class, or about 80 minutes if you stay to eat. Sanuki Mengyo Hyogomachi is a 100–120 minute central-Takamatsu block. UDON HOUSE is an overnight food-culture program with a Day 1 class and farm component plus a Day 2 breakfast udon tour.
That makes route fit more important than a generic “best class” ranking. If Konpira-san is already in the day, Nakano is hard to beat. If you are car-free in Takamatsu, Hyogomachi can be worth paying more for because it removes a suburban transfer. If udon culture is one of the reasons you came to Shikoku, UDON HOUSE becomes defensible—but as an overnight experience, not as a premium version of a 50-minute class.

Nakano Udon School: strongest when Kotohira already pays the transport cost
Nakano’s current Kotohira experience is JPY 1,760 per person (about US$11), normally from two participants. The school asks guests to arrive about 15 minutes early because reception can take time.
The take-away version is about 50 minutes; eating the noodles adds roughly 30 minutes. That means the longer version can replace lunch rather than simply add another activity.
The key advantage is geography. Nakano sits on the Konpira-san approach. If Kotohira is already in the itinerary, there is almost no second-location penalty. I would not send a first-time visitor back to Takamatsu solely to find a “better” class unless the technical depth itself is the priority.
Families also get a useful boundary: the school permits young children, but knife handling means close adult help is necessary. The site explicitly says there is no overrun fee when children make the session take longer. That is family-friendly—but it means a tightly timed onward train is a bad pairing.
Sanuki Mengyo is two different products hiding under one company name
The head-office dojo in Matsunami starts at 10:00 and runs about 90 minutes. The current official page contains conflicting price references—JPY 1,980 in one detailed block and JPY 1,760 in a lower table—so use the live reservation checkout rather than copying one number into a budget.
The access fact is clearer: Sanuki Mengyo says the head office is around 20 minutes by taxi from JR Takamatsu Station, with an indicative taxi fare around JPY 2,000 each way. For a car-free couple, a roughly JPY 4,000 (about US$25) group taxi round trip can be more important than the class-price difference.
Hyogomachi is the opposite product. It is in central Takamatsu, about 12 minutes on foot from JR Takamatsu Station and 15 minutes from the port. The current full course is JPY 4,500 (about US$28); the half course is JPY 2,800 (about US$18). The full course runs 100–120 minutes, with current starts at 10:30, 14:00, 17:00 and 19:00.
ValueNavi interpretation: Hyogomachi’s premium can be a time purchase. With a rental car, the head office can win. Without one, the cheaper class can become the more expensive itinerary.

UDON HOUSE: compare it with an overnight food experience, not another workshop
The current English program is JPY 33,000 including tax (about US$208). It includes the Udon Master Class, one night of lodging and a Day 2 breakfast udon tour.
The published schedule begins with 10:00 check-in on Day 1, followed by class modules on kneading, dashi/umami, a farm component, rolling/cutting and an udon dinner, ending around 17:00. Day 2 runs a breakfast udon tour from around 07:30 to 10:00 before checkout.
A 2026 operating change matters. From April 2026, UDON HOUSE shifted program operations mainly to Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, with weekdays generally room-only. The Japanese overnight program was restructured, but the official notice explicitly says the English program remains on the previous format: class on Day 1, breakfast udon hopping on Day 2.
That language difference is a real booking risk. Do not read the current Japanese overnight structure and assume it applies to the English program.

UDON HOUSE loses on money and time but wins on uniqueness. That is not a flaw in the score—it shows why the same product can be excellent for a food-culture trip and irrational on a two-night first visit.
The biggest failure mode is a hard ferry or train immediately after class
Nakano asks for early arrival. Sanuki Mengyo uses synchronized starts. Families can run long. Eating adds time. Do not calculate an onward ferry from “class start + advertised duration.” Calculate it from full finish + meal + walk/taxi back to the station or port.
If a Naoshima ferry or intercity train matters, use a morning class with multiple later departures or put the class on the previous half-day.

Final verdict
For a first Kagawa trip, choose the class already on your route. Nakano is the strongest Kotohira add-on. Hyogomachi is the best time purchase for many car-free Takamatsu visitors. The head office improves with a car or group. UDON HOUSE only becomes the winner when udon culture deserves an overnight.
The correct comparison is not class price. It is price + door-to-door time + what the activity replaces + how much depth you will actually use.
