Nita Pass is easiest to recommend in autumn when you have a car or a confirmed private transfer from Unzen Onsen. For a no-car traveller, the current 2026 situation is less convenient than older guides can make it sound: Unzen Tourism currently states that the shared taxi to Nita Pass is suspended. Ordinary public transport gets you to Unzen Onsen, not all the way to the ropeway.
The second decision point is the calendar. October 31 and November 1 have different operating windows even if the foliage looks identical. From November 1, both the Nita Pass loop road and the ropeway move to their shorter winter schedule. A late-afternoon mountain visit that works on October 31 can become a bad plan one day later.

Your trip | Start with | Why | Main catch |
Rental car + flexible day | Nita Pass as weather-dependent Plan A | You can react to visibility and move between the pass and Unzen Onsen | Peak foliage can create parking and loop-road congestion |
No car + Nagasaki day trip | Conditional only | Bus reaches Unzen Onsen, but current shared taxi to Nita Pass is suspended | Private taxi availability and cost become part of the trip |
No car + one Unzen Onsen night | Much stronger | Two weather windows and more time to arrange the final transfer | Still no guarantee of summit visibility |
Clear day but upper foliage past peak | Use lower Unzen / onsen-zone colour | Autumn moves down the mountain | Do not buy the ropeway just because it is open |
Dense fog / bad visibility | Unzen Jigoku / onsen / lower walk | The ropeway premium is primarily panorama | Conditions could improve if you have an overnight and a second window |
There are three different Nita Pass products
“Go to Nita Pass” is too vague to plan well. The pass can mean three very different levels of commitment:
Drive-up viewpoint: reach the pass, use the parking/view area and return. Lowest physical effort; still weather-dependent.
Ropeway visit: ride to Myokendake, use the higher viewpoints and return. Best for first-time visitors who want the panorama without a long hike.
Proper mountain walk: continue beyond the simple ropeway visit into a hiking route. Requires footwear, weather margin and a separate turnaround calculation.
A family that only wants autumn scenery should not inherit the time budget of a hiker. A hiker should not judge Nita Pass from the three-minute ropeway ride alone.
October 31 vs November 1: the schedule change is a real itinerary boundary
The Unzen Ropeway currently lists:
April 1–October 31: first service around 08:51, final uphill 17:03, final downhill 17:23.
November 1–March 31: first service around 08:51, final uphill 16:51, final downhill 17:11.
The Nita Pass loop road changes at the same calendar boundary:
April–October: road open 08:00–18:00; downhill gate locked 18:45.
November–March: road open 08:00–17:00; downhill gate locked 17:45.
That means a November visit loses a full hour of road access even before you think about sunset. If you are driving from Nagasaki or Shimabara, I would treat 15:00–16:00 as a substantially more sensitive arrival window in November than in October.
The ropeway fare is currently JPY 1,500 return for adults and JPY 750 for children, with a roughly three-minute ride every 12 minutes under normal operation. It is first-come, first-served and the operator currently states that payment is cash only.
No-car travellers: the shared-taxi assumption is currently wrong
Older itineraries often describe the final leg from Unzen Onsen to Nita Pass as a shared taxi. Unzen Tourism currently states that the shared taxi is suspended.
This does not make Nita Pass impossible without a car. It changes what has to be solved:
regular bus/transport to Unzen Onsen;
a private taxi or another confirmed transfer for the roughly 15-minute final climb;
a return arrangement that does not depend on finding a car spontaneously after the ropeway closes.
For a same-day Nagasaki trip, that makes Nita Pass a conditional stop rather than a default. For an Unzen Onsen overnight, you have time to ask the hotel about taxi arrangements, recheck the weather in the morning and abort the mountain without destroying the whole day.
The hidden cost is not only taxi fare. It is the possibility that the final transfer is unavailable at the time you need it.
The ropeway is worth JPY 1,500 only when it solves a view problem

The ropeway gives fast access to the high viewpoint zone. On a clear autumn day, that is excellent value: you skip a steep climb and gain a broad view over the Unzen mountains and surrounding seas.
But “ropeway operating” and “ropeway worth riding” are different questions. The operator publishes live weather, wind and visibility information. Use it.
I would not ride purely because you have reached Nita Pass if:
the upper station is inside dense cloud;
the top foliage is already past peak while lower slopes are stronger;
you have arrived so late that the road-gate or descent window becomes stressful;
someone in the group does not want the elevated viewpoint and will not use the value you are paying for.
The strongest recommendation is conditional: ride on a clear or usable-visibility day when high-elevation colour is still part of the product you want.
Autumn timing should be read by elevation, not by one “Unzen peak” date
Official Nagasaki/Unzen guidance places Nita Pass autumn roughly from late October into mid-November in a normal year, but that range is not a guarantee for 2026. Higher Myokendake colour generally progresses before the lower onsen zone.
This creates a useful late-season rule: if you arrive after the upper colour has weakened, do not conclude that “Unzen autumn is over.” Move down the mountain. Unzen Onsen, Jigoku and lower roads can still carry stronger colour after the high slopes decline.
Conversely, an early trip can have good summit colour while the onsen town remains green. Choose the altitude you came for.
Driving buys weather flexibility, not immunity from queues

The Nita Pass car park is currently listed at roughly 200 passenger cars plus bus spaces. The loop road is free to use, with an environmental-conservation contribution requested.
That sounds generous until peak foliage. The ropeway/operator information warns that holidays and autumn can create heavy traffic on the loop road. A driver who reaches the queue at midday has already spent the main advantage of having a car: the ability to get to the mountain before demand builds.
I would use a rental car in one of two ways:
Early mountain first: Nita Pass before the onsen town, then descend for lunch/bath.
Weather pivot: start in Unzen Onsen if the summit is fogged, then go up only if visibility improves before your cutoff.
Do not use the car to force Nita Pass late in the day just because you can physically drive there.
One night in Unzen Onsen buys a second forecast, not just an onsen
An overnight becomes valuable when Nita Pass is important enough that one bad-weather window would disappoint you. You arrive, use Unzen Jigoku or the town, have dinner, sleep, then check live ropeway status the next morning.
If the summit is clear, go. If it is fogged, wait only to a pre-set cutoff or stay lower. That is a much better product than taking a long same-day detour from Nagasaki and discovering at noon that the mountain has no view.
The night is weaker when Nita Pass is only a minor optional stop. In that case, staying in Nagasaki and deciding on the day preserves more of the wider trip.
How I would choose between Nagasaki day trip and Unzen overnight
↔ Scroll table left or right
Pattern | Verdict | Why |
Rental car, Nita Pass is optional | Day trip | You can cancel the branch if live weather is poor |
Rental car, Nita Pass + ryokan are top priorities | Overnight | Two weather windows and a more coherent mountain/onsen sequence |
No car, only one Nagasaki free day | Usually skip or keep highly conditional | The final transfer is less reliable while the shared taxi is suspended |
No car, willing to stay in Unzen | Overnight | Hotel can help solve taxi timing and you avoid a same-day chain of transfers |
Do not confuse the ropeway with a full hike

The ropeway gives an accessible mountain view, but hiking beyond the upper station introduces a new risk profile: steeper terrain, weather exposure and longer return time. If you want Myokendake or a broader mountain route, use the hiking time and current trail conditions rather than the ropeway timetable as your planning unit.
For a family, older traveller or visitor with limited walking tolerance, the ropeway + short viewpoint visit is already a complete product. There is no need to turn a scenic ride into a summit challenge to “get value” from the ticket.
Bad weather: the correct Plan B is down, not sideways
When the summit is fogged, the smartest fallback is usually to move lower into the Unzen Onsen area rather than drive across Nagasaki Prefecture chasing another mountain. Unzen Jigoku, an onsen bath, lunch and lower-elevation autumn can still create a coherent day.
This is especially true late in the season, when the upper foliage may be past peak anyway. The mountain itself gives you the fallback by elevation.
Final verdict
For 2026, I would treat Nita Pass as a strong self-drive autumn stop and a conditional no-car stop. The ropeway is inexpensive relative to the day and genuinely useful when visibility is good. The weak point is the last mile: the shared taxi from Unzen Onsen is currently suspended, so no-car travellers need a private taxi or another confirmed transfer.
Also treat November 1 as an operating boundary, not just another foliage date. Road access and ropeway closing move earlier. If the mountain is a major reason for the trip, one night in Unzen Onsen buys enough schedule and weather resilience to justify the hotel move; if it is only an optional photo stop, keep it flexible from Nagasaki.
