The Yufuin no Mori disruption is shorter than older August guidance now suggests. JR Kyushu’s current operating plan says Yufuin no Mori Nos. 3 and 4 are replaced by limited express Yufu 73 and 74 only through September 18, 2026. From September 19 through September 30, Nos. 1–6 return to normal Yufuin no Mori operation. From October 1 onward, Nos. 1–6 are also planned to operate normally, although individual dates can still be non-operating days for vehicle inspections and must be checked against the official operating calendar.
That date boundary matters if the sightseeing train itself is why you are booking. A September 18 reservation for the normal No. 3/4 time slot is not the same product as a September 19 reservation. Before September 19, target Nos. 1, 2, 5 or 6 if the actual green D&S train is non-negotiable. From September 19, do not cancel a suitable No. 3 or 4 simply because an older article still says the replacement lasts through September 30.
If your real priority is arriving in Yufuin before a ryokan dinner, keep the hierarchy the other way round: protect the hotel arrival first and treat the sightseeing train as a bonus. A beautiful train ride is poor value if it consumes the dinner, bath or check-in window you paid for at the destination.
Which Yufuin no Mori should you book in 2026?

Travel date | Current official operating plan | If the D&S train itself matters |
Now–Sep 18 | Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6 normal; normal Nos. 3/4 slots operate as Yufu 73/74 with a four-car KiHa 185 set | Choose 1, 2, 5 or 6 if possible |
Sep 19–30 | Yufuin no Mori Nos. 1–6 normal | All six are back in the sightseeing-train plan; select by timing and seat availability |
Oct 1 onward | Nos. 1–6 planned to operate normally | Check the official operating-day calendar because inspection days can still remove individual services |
This is a better booking rule than memorising a train number for the entire year. Date first, current operating notice second, train name third. The JR Kyushu booking search can display both Yufuin no Mori and the ordinary limited express Yufu, so check the actual train name before payment rather than inferring it from a familiar departure time.
The replacement through September 18 changes the experience, not just the train colour
Through September 18, the normal No. 3/4 slot is being covered by Yufu 73/74 using a four-car KiHa 185 set. It still solves the transport problem on the corridor, but it is not the same D&S sightseeing product. Do not assume the same lounge, buffet, high-deck interior, luggage layout or onboard atmosphere simply because the route and timing look familiar.
If your trip is railfan-first, choose an operating Yufuin no Mori service. If your trip is destination-first, a replacement Yufu can still be the rational choice when its arrival gives you the best ryokan buffer. The right answer changes with what you are actually buying.

Your priority | Best decision | Reversal condition |
Ride the Yufuin no Mori itself | Before Sep 19, target Nos. 1/2/5/6 | From Sep 19, Nos. 3/4 return to the normal plan too |
Reach a fixed ryokan dinner | Choose the service with the safer arrival buffer | Switch to the sightseeing train only when it does not endanger check-in or dinner |
Travel from Oct 1 | Start from the operating-day calendar, then book | An inspection non-operating day overrides the general “normal operation” plan |

Reservations open one month before travel at 10:00 JST
JR Kyushu says Yufuin no Mori reserved seats go on sale at 10:00 Japan time one month before the boarding date. All seats on Yufuin no Mori are reserved, so there is no unreserved-car fallback if your preferred train sells out.
JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation currently operates from 05:30 to 23:00 JST, opens bookings at 10:00 one month before departure and can accept ordinary online reservations until six minutes before departure when inventory remains. Up to seven seats can be booked in one transaction. Those late technical cut-offs are not a reason to delay a peak-date booking; they simply explain the system boundary.
For weekends, foliage season, school holidays or a group that needs adjacent seats, make the booking-window date part of the trip plan. For a flexible solo traveller, the need to book at exactly 10:00 is lower because you can compare more trains and seat positions.

Do not book by departure time alone
JR Kyushu itself warns that search results can show both Yufuin no Mori and Yufu. During the current replacement period, that warning has real consequences: a traveller who remembers only “the mid-day train” can accidentally buy the transport they need while missing the sightseeing train they thought they were buying.
Before payment, check six fields:
travel date;
train name;
train number;
origin and destination;
seat/car assignment;
the latest JR Kyushu operating notice.
For October and later travel, add the operating-day calendar to that checklist. “Nos. 1–6 normal” describes the service plan, not a promise that every train runs every date of the year.
Rail Pass users still need a seat reservation
A JR Kyushu Rail Pass can cover eligible train travel, but it does not create a Yufuin no Mori seat. Because the train is reserved-seating-only, pass users need a seat assignment before boarding.
↔ Scroll table left or right
Pass situation | Current reserved-seat rule | What to watch |
All Kyushu Rail Pass | Unlimited standard reserved-seat reservations within the pass rules | Seat availability still applies |
Northern Kyushu Rail Pass | Up to six standard reserved-seat reservations without additional seat-reservation charge after pass exchange/purchase | Seven or more reserved-seat uses require separate handling/payment |
Advance Yufuin no Mori reservation through JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking | Current additional fee: ¥1,500 per adult (~US$9.40) | This is a paid advance-reservation service; reservations made this way do not count against the six standard-reservation limit |
The decision is therefore not “Rail Pass or reservation.” It is Rail Pass + seat reservation. If you already know the exact Yufuin no Mori you must ride before arriving in Japan, the ¥1,500 advance service can buy certainty. If your dates are flexible and you can reserve after receiving the pass, paying the advance fee may not add enough value.
Do not buy a Northern Kyushu Rail Pass solely to solve one Yufuin no Mori journey. Compare the pass against the rest of your Kyushu rail itinerary first. The Northern Kyushu Rail Pass break-even guide is the better place to make that decision.
Seat choice: correct train and adjacent seats beat chasing one “best side”
There is no single side that stays best for the entire journey. Curves and changing terrain move the view. For most travellers, the priority order should be:

correct operating train;
group seated together;
car that works for luggage and mobility;
then side/view preference.
JR Kyushu says box seats are sold only at a Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office, not through the normal web flow. Wheelchair-compatible seating on the applicable Yufuin no Mori III trainset must also be arranged through a ticket office or by phone. Treat those as special products rather than assuming every seat type appears online.
Luggage: the train number matters because the layout can change
Do not build a large-luggage plan from one saved Yufuin no Mori seat map and assume every replacement or inspection-related train has the same layout. JR Kyushu warns that train formations can change because of inspections, and the current Yufu 73/74 replacement through September 18 uses different rolling stock from the D&S train.
With one ordinary suitcase, use the designated luggage areas and board with enough time to stow it without blocking aisles or doors. With two large cases, a stroller plus suitcases, or mobility equipment, reduce the uncertainty: choose the most suitable car available, confirm assistance where needed, or forward the larger luggage to Yufuin or Beppu.
The important boundary is that a train reservation secures a seat, not an unlimited private luggage bay. If luggage friction is more important than the D&S experience, choose the transport option that handles the group cleanly.

If your preferred train sells out, protect the destination before protecting the brand
↔ Scroll table left or right
Fallback | Use it when | What you give up |
Another Yufuin no Mori | The D&S train itself matters and another service still fits the hotel | Preferred departure/arrival time |
Limited express Yufu | Direct corridor and arrival time matter more than sightseeing-train branding | Yufuin no Mori onboard experience |
Sonic via Oita + onward local rail | Direct inventory is poor and the eastern route gives a safer arrival | More distance and a transfer |
Yufuin-go highway bus | Rail inventory is weak and the bus timetable fits your hotel better | Road-delay exposure; the bus is also reservable and can sell out |
For an overnight, work backward from the property’s latest check-in and dinner time. If the ryokan dinner begins at a fixed hour, give yourself enough buffer for station exit, local transport and an ordinary delay. That buffer is usually worth more than squeezing in one later sightseeing-train departure.
If you are still choosing between staying in Yufuin and Beppu, use Beppu vs Yufuin before locking a train simply because it looks scenic.
Hita stopover: one reserved seat is not hop-on, hop-off permission
If you want to stop in Hita on the way to Yufuin, treat the trip as separate travel segments. A reserved Hakata–Yufuin seat does not remain yours after you get off and spend several hours sightseeing. Book the actual segments you intend to ride and make sure the second service still has reserved-seat inventory.
This is especially important when the sightseeing train is the goal. A Hita stop can turn one simple reservation into two scarce reservations. If Hita is optional, it may be better as a separate day or on a route where the train experience is not the non-negotiable part.

Ticket pickup: do not make collection the first surprise of departure morning
JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation tickets can be collected at eligible JR Kyushu ticket offices or reserved-seat ticket machines. JR Kyushu says you need the credit card used for payment, the reservation number and the identification number set during booking. Check collection eligibility for your station before the travel morning.
If you arrive in Japan late at night and depart early the next morning, collect the ticket earlier when practical. The train reservation may be secure while your pickup plan is not.
Final verdict
The most important 2026 update is the September 19 restoration date. Through September 18, Nos. 3 and 4 are replaced by Yufu 73/74; from September 19 through September 30, all Yufuin no Mori Nos. 1–6 return to normal operation. From October 1 onward, all six are also planned normally, subject to the official operating-day calendar and inspection-related non-operating dates.
If the train experience matters, check the date boundary and the train name before paying. If the destination matters more, work backward from the ryokan or onward connection and buy the most resilient arrival. Then solve the seat, Rail Pass and luggage details around that decision—not the other way round.
Next decision: choose whether Yufuin or Beppu should hold the overnight
