Hiroshima Airport is the default for most Hiroshima trips. Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport is a specialist alternative when a flight you can actually book lines up with Miyajima, Kintaikyo or western Yamaguchi. The important order is published flight schedule → arrival/departure clock → first or last hotel direction. Do not choose Iwakuni from the map first and assume the flight network will cooperate.
There is an important 2026 booking boundary. Iwakuni Airport’s current English timetable page labels its published Tokyo Haneda and Okinawa schedule as valid through October 23, 2026. If your trip is after that date, stop before using the current five-Haneda-plus-one-Okinawa pattern in your itinerary. Confirm the next operating period first. A geographically elegant airport is not a real option until the flight exists on your travel date.

Your trip | Start with | Why | Hard veto |
International arrival / departure | Hiroshima Airport | Hiroshima currently has scheduled international services; Iwakuni’s published network is domestic | Do not add a Haneda connection merely to use Iwakuni unless total timing and fare improve |
Haneda → Miyajima overnight first | Iwakuni can win | The route keeps moving east toward Miyajimaguchi instead of entering Hiroshima first | Flight lands too late for JR + ferry + ryokan dinner |
Haneda → Hiroshima Station hotel | Hiroshima Airport | Direct limousine bus fits the city’s main rail hub | Iwakuni flight schedule or fare is materially better |
Central Hiroshima / Peace Park hotel | Hiroshima Airport usually | Direct airport bus reaches Hiroshima Bus Center | Iwakuni flight is much better and the extra ground time is acceptable |
Travel after Oct. 23, 2026 | Verify Iwakuni’s next timetable first | The current official English flight table is explicitly date-limited | No confirmed flight = no Iwakuni comparison |

Gate 1: the Iwakuni flight has to exist on your exact date
Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport’s current English timetable lists five daily Tokyo Haneda rotations and one Okinawa rotation, but it also places an explicit horizon on that published schedule: until October 23, 2026. That date is not a footnote. It changes how future trips should be planned.
If you are travelling in September or early October, the current schedule is a usable planning input. If you are travelling after October 23, do not copy the same frequencies into a spreadsheet and treat them as confirmed. Wait for or verify the next published timetable.
This creates a simple ValueNavi rule: flight inventory is a hard gate; ground geography is only an optimisation. A theoretically shorter road/rail path from Iwakuni to Miyajima has zero value when the required flight is not operating or has not yet been confirmed.
Gate 2: Iwakuni only wins Miyajima when the clock reaches the ferry
Iwakuni’s geographic advantage is real for a Miyajima-first trip. The airport links to Iwakuni Station, then JR continues toward Miyajimaguchi. That can keep a Haneda arrival moving in the same direction as the island instead of entering Hiroshima city first and backtracking west.
But the late flight is the failure mode. The current published Haneda arrival pattern includes an evening flight reaching Iwakuni around 21:40. By the time the airport bus and JR connection reach Miyajimaguchi, the normal ferry day is effectively over. The airport may still be closer on a map, but the intended island night has failed operationally.
Before booking a Miyajima ryokan, build the whole chain:
flight arrival → baggage → airport bus → Iwakuni Station → JR → Miyajimaguchi → ferry → hotel dinner/check-in.
If one segment has no margin, change the flight, sleep on the mainland, or use Hiroshima Airport with a different first-night plan. Do not let a “closer airport” label destroy the accommodation experience.
Hiroshima Airport is stronger when the first or last hotel is at Hiroshima Station
Hiroshima Airport currently provides a direct limousine-bus chain to Hiroshima Station. For a traveller with large luggage, that is operationally important: bags go into the bus hold after the airport and come out at the city’s principal JR/Shinkansen node.
A Hiroshima Station hotel then performs two jobs if the next morning uses the Shinkansen. The arrival ends at the hotel’s transport hub, and the departure begins from the same place. Iwakuni would need a significantly better flight or fare to compensate for travelling east into Hiroshima after landing west of the city.
That is why airport choice should follow the hotel. If your wider accommodation decision is still open, use Hiroshima Station vs Peace Park first.
Central Hiroshima makes Iwakuni less absurd—but still not the default
For a hotel around Hiroshima Bus Center, Kamiyacho or Peace Memorial Park, the comparison is closer than the station-only map suggests. Hiroshima Airport has a direct city-centre bus, while Iwakuni also publishes a direct route to Hiroshima Bus Center.
The point is not that Iwakuni becomes equally convenient. The point is that airport-to-city travel should be measured to the actual hotel area. If a Haneda–Iwakuni flight is materially cheaper or lands at a much better time, a central-Hiroshima traveller can rationally accept a longer bus ride. If the flight advantage is small, Hiroshima Airport remains the cleaner choice.

Iwakuni is strongest when Miyajima is an overnight, not just a day trip
The directional benefit earns more when you are buying Miyajima’s evening and morning. A workable Haneda arrival can move Iwakuni Airport → Miyajimaguchi → ferry → island, then the trip continues east into Hiroshima the next day. That removes one piece of backtracking.

If Miyajima is only a daytime excursion and every hotel night remains in Hiroshima, the gain shrinks. Fly to the airport that gives the best overall Hiroshima arrival, keep one city base and make the island trip from there.
Use Hiroshima or Miyajima for one night before bending the flight plan around the western airport. The airport decision becomes easier once the island night is real rather than hypothetical.
Departure should be planned backward from the flight, not forward from the hotel
Arrival can absorb some inefficiency. Departure cannot. If the final night is on Miyajima or near Miyajimaguchi, Iwakuni can remove eastward backtracking—but only if its flight leaves late enough to preserve the night you paid for.
Work backward:
airline bag-drop target → airport arrival buffer → airport bus → JR → ferry → hotel checkout/breakfast.
If an early Iwakuni flight forces a pre-breakfast ferry and a fragile chain, move the final night to the mainland or choose another flight/airport. The airport should protect the hotel night, not erase it.
Count luggage hand-offs, not kilometres
Hiroshima Airport’s direct city buses can reduce the number of times a large bag changes mode. Iwakuni-to-Miyajima is geographically elegant but usually involves airport bus + JR + ferry. That difference is minor for one carry-on and much more important for a family, older travellers or two 29-inch cases.
Use this planning formula:
Total airport friction =
flight schedule risk
+ luggage hand-offs
+ ground travel
+ final ferry/hotel connection
+ cost of the failure caseThe failure case deserves extra weight. Missing one city bus is annoying. Missing the last practical ferry or a ryokan dinner can invalidate the entire first night.
Open-jaw airports only work when the route is genuinely one-way
A sensible open-jaw example is Haneda → Iwakuni, Miyajima first, Hiroshima city second, then Hiroshima Airport onward. The reverse can work too. The value comes from removing backtracking.
Reject the idea when using two airports creates a worse flight time, an unwanted connection, another hotel night or separate-ticket complexity. A simple Hiroshima Airport round trip can be better even if the map looks less elegant.
Final verdict
Choose Hiroshima Airport by default for Hiroshima city, international access and the broadest schedule choice.
Choose Iwakuni only after three gates pass: the exact flight exists, the arrival/departure clock protects the ferry/hotel plan, and the route genuinely points toward Miyajima, Iwakuni or western Yamaguchi.
For travel after October 23, 2026, add a fourth gate: verify the next Iwakuni timetable before using the current five-Haneda-plus-one-Okinawa pattern. Until the next schedule is confirmed, that frequency is not a future fact.
The airport that is closest on a map is not necessarily the airport that produces the fewest fragile steps.
