Hita to Yufuin Itinerary: Attack on Titan & Private Onsen

A two-day Hita–Yufuin trip works when Hita has one clear job and Yufuin gets the protected overnight. For most car-free first-time visitors, I would choose either a compact Hita town stop or a focused Attack on Titan circuit—not both—then leave Hita on the 13:39 Yufu 3 so the ryokan still receives the useful part of the afternoon. If you try to combine Mameda-machi, the main Attack on Titan museum, Oyama Dam, the ANNEX and a premium Yufuin dinner in one day, the itinerary stops being a stopover and becomes a race against check-in.

The key insight is geographic. The Attack on Titan sites are not one walkable Hita-station cluster. The ANNEX is about ten minutes from Hita Station by car; the main museum in Oyama is about nineteen minutes by car; Oyama Dam is roughly twenty minutes from the station. Hita tourism currently sells a dedicated shuttle-taxi circuit for exactly this reason. A fandom-heavy Hita day therefore needs a taxi, rental car or deliberate tour plan rather than a casual walk between sights.

Day 1: the best public-transport version is Hita first, but with a fixed exit

JR Kyushu’s current Yufuin no Mori timetable gives two useful morning arrivals into Hita from Hakata: Yufuin no Mori 1 leaves Hakata at 09:17 and reaches Hita at 10:37, while the next pattern leaves Hakata at 10:11 and reaches Hita at 11:33 on the published schedule. The later departure still works, but it shrinks Hita into a much tighter stop.

The important train is the one leaving Hita, not the one arriving. JR Kyushu’s current station timetable lists Yufu 3 at 13:39 toward Yufuin/Beppu. At Yufuin, the same train continues toward Beppu at 14:45, so it reaches Yufuin in the mid-14:40s. That is the timetable anchor I would use for a half-board ryokan.

This creates two practical windows:

09:17 Hakata departure: roughly three hours in Hita before the 13:39 exit.
10:11 Hakata departure: roughly two hours in Hita before the same exit.

Those are useful stopover windows. They are not enough for every Hita attraction.

Choose one Hita product: townscape or Attack on Titan circuit

Option A: Mameda-machi and lunch

This is the most resilient choice without a car. Keep the visit compact: preserved streets, one museum/shop/café stop and lunch. The goal is to experience Hita without turning the Yufuin night into a late transfer.

This version is strongest for couples, older travellers, families and anyone carrying a small overnight bag. It also gives you the easiest escape if rain slows the morning or the train arrives late.

Option B: Attack on Titan is the priority

Do not plan the fandom route as though all the sites sit beside Hita Station. Current official information places the Attack on Titan in HITA Museum ANNEX about ten minutes from the station by car. It is currently open 10:00–19:00, charges JPY 700 for adults and is free for visitors under 18.

The main Attack on Titan in HITA Museum is in Oyama, roughly nineteen minutes from Hita Station by car. Current 2026 information lists adult admission at JPY 500, with weekday hours 09:30–16:00 and weekend/holiday hours to 17:00. Oyama Dam, with the Eren, Mikasa and Armin childhood statues, is also around twenty minutes from Hita Station by car.

The spatial split is large enough that Hita tourism currently operates a dedicated shuttle-taxi tour. Its shorter circuit runs Hita Tourist Information Center → roughly 20 minutes to Oyama Dam → 20-minute visit → roughly 10 minutes to the main museum → 60–180 minutes there → roughly 20 minutes back to Hita or the ANNEX. Even using the minimum museum time, that is already about two hours ten minutes before boarding buffers.

That leads to a clear rule: if you want the full Oyama fandom circuit, let it replace Mameda rather than sit on top of it. If you only want one Attack on Titan stop, the ANNEX is the easiest to pair with central Hita because it is much closer than Oyama.

The 13:39 Hita departure is a planning cutoff, not an official last train

There are later trains. The current timetable lists another local train at 14:39 and Yufuin no Mori 5 at 15:56. The reason I prefer 13:39 is not that later travel is impossible. It is that a premium Yufuin overnight has a diminishing return when you keep giving its afternoon away.

Yufuin no Mori 5 currently reaches Yufuin at 16:50. That can be perfectly acceptable for a room-only hotel or a ryokan with a late dinner and confirmed pickup. It is much weaker when you paid for a private bath, pre-dinner room time or a meal window beginning soon after arrival.

So use 13:39 as a ValueNavi ryokan-protection cutoff. Break it only after confirming what the later arrival actually costs you at the property.

Large luggage makes the 13:39 plan much less forgiving

Yufuin’s official Chikki baggage service currently accepts luggage for delivery from the Tourist Information Center to participating ryokan from 09:00 to 15:00. General temporary storage and coin lockers at the service run from 09:00 to 17:00. Ryokan delivery is only for participating Yufuin Onsen Tourist Association properties.

That matters because Yufu 3 reaches Yufuin only shortly before its 14:45 onward departure. In practice, you arrive with very little margin before the 15:00 ryokan-delivery cutoff. If you take Yufuin no Mori 5 and arrive at 16:50, you are also close to the 17:00 storage closing time.

Do not make the trip depend on winning that race. For a Hita stop with large luggage, use one of three strategies:

forward the main suitcase from Hakata to the confirmed receiving hotel;
carry only an overnight bag through Hita and leave the main case with a hotel that has explicitly agreed to hold it;
arrange the Yufuin ryokan’s own pickup/taxi plan in writing before travel.

Do not use an expensive Yufuin ryokan as a transit hotel

The Yufuin night should buy at least two things a day trip cannot reproduce: a fixed ryokan dinner, private or public bathing, quiet evening hours, breakfast, or an early walk before the main daytime flow. If you arrive after dinner and leave before breakfast, the premium has failed its own value test.

“Private onsen” is not one product. It can mean an in-room bath, a reservable family bath shared among guests or a paid private bath with a time slot. Verify the exact room name and access rule rather than assuming every ryokan with the phrase “private onsen” gives unlimited bathing inside your room.

For this itinerary, I would pay more for a ryokan only when the extra time created by the 13:39 Hita exit will actually be used. If the room is mainly a bed between trains, a simpler Yufuin hotel—or keeping the night elsewhere—can be the better purchase.

2026 Yufuin Station works differently from older trip reports

JR Kyushu began using a temporary Yufuin Station building on March 26, 2026 while the existing building is repaired. The current station ticket-counter hours during the works are 07:00–18:00, and the platform footbath has been closed since March 14 for the construction period. The station art hall is also temporarily closed during the 2026 works.

This does not materially damage the overnight, but it removes a few old-trip-report assumptions. Do not budget station-footbath time or expect the previous station layout when you are moving luggage against a narrow ryokan pickup window.

Day 2: spend the morning on the hours you paid to unlock

The overnight earns its value before another transfer begins. Kinrin Lake is roughly a 30-minute walk from JR Yufuin Station according to the official tourism guide. In colder autumn and winter mornings, the lake can develop the well-known early-morning mist, but it is weather-dependent rather than a guaranteed sunrise show.

A robust overnight should still feel worthwhile on a clear morning with no mist. Use the lake walk, breakfast, another bath or quiet property time, then choose one onward direction after checkout.

Back to Fukuoka: keep the morning simple and protect the reserved train/bus.
Continue to Beppu: Day 2 afternoon can work for one Beppu block, but a complete Beppu experience usually deserves a third day.
Continue deeper into Kyushu: verify the actual connection before adding Aso or Kumamoto; map distance is not timetable frequency.

When Beppu should become Day 3 instead of Day 2

Two days can contain Hita and a real Yufuin overnight because Hita is deliberately compressed. Adding a complete Beppu day changes the trip category.

Make it three days when you want more than one of these in Beppu: the Hells, Kannawa steam streets, a significant onsen/sand-bath experience, a resort evening or an onward departure that deserves its own buffer. Use the three-day Fukuoka–Hita–Yufuin–Beppu route rather than cannibalising the Yufuin morning.

Three versions I would actually use

Version 1: best-balanced car-free first trip

Day 1: Hakata 09:17 → Hita 10:37 → Mameda/lunch → Yufu 3 at 13:39 → Yufuin mid-afternoon → ryokan dinner/onsen.

Day 2: early Kinrin Lake or quiet ryokan morning → breakfast/bath → depart after the overnight has done its job.

Best for: first-time visitors who want Hita and a real Yufuin stay without turning either into a checklist.

Version 2: Attack on Titan priority

Day 1: morning arrival in Hita → pre-booked taxi/car → choose the Oyama museum + Dam circuit, or ANNEX + one second site → leave according to the confirmed ryokan deadline.

What to cut: most of Mameda and secondary Hita stops.

Best for: fans who would regret skipping the outlying locations more than skipping historic-town sightseeing.

Version 3: late start or luggage-heavy trip

Day 1: skip Hita → go directly to Yufuin → use the ryokan properly.

Day 2: Yufuin morning → onward.

Why: Hita is the easiest component to delete. The one expensive overnight is harder to reconstruct after its dinner or bath window has passed.

Final verdict

For two days, make Hita a selective stop and Yufuin the protected overnight. If you are car-free and the ryokan matters, the cleanest pattern is a morning train to Hita followed by Yufu 3 at 13:39. If Attack on Titan is the reason for stopping, recognise that the main museum and Oyama Dam are outlying car/taxi sights; choose them instead of trying to complete Mameda as well. Forward or reduce large luggage, because Yufuin’s 15:00 ryokan-delivery cutoff leaves little margin after an afternoon arrival.

The recommendation reverses when Hita is the main destination rather than a stopover. In that case, give Hita more time and either accept a later/simple Yufuin hotel or add a night. A two-day itinerary should protect the experience you would most regret losing, not the largest number of pins on the map.
