Fukuoka, Hita, Yufuin and Beppu in 3 Days: Which Two Nights?

Plan Fukuoka, Hita, Yufuin and Beppu in three days by choosing the hotel order from your exit direction, ryokan dinner, luggage and final transport.

Two-night hotel split for a three-day Fukuoka, Hita, Yufuin and Beppu route
Fukuoka, Hita, Yufuin and Beppu in 3 Days: Which Two Nights?

There is no single best order for Fukuoka, Hita, Yufuin and Beppu in three days. If you start in Fukuoka and continue east through Beppu or Oita, a strong first-trip order is Hita → Yufuin Night 1 → Beppu Night 2. If you must finish back in Fukuoka, the reverse can be stronger: Beppu Night 1 → Yufuin Night 2 → Hita → Fukuoka. The sequence should be decided by the least flexible hotel night, the final transport direction and how much luggage you are willing to move—not by a belief that one town is always the “correct” second night.

There is also a date gate for autumn 2026. Nishitetsu has announced a September 1, 2026 timetable and fare revision on the Fukuoka–Oita line and a October 1, 2026 timetable revision with additional services and changed times on the Fukuoka–Beppu line. If you travel around those dates, do not freeze an August bus count or departure time into the itinerary. The extra Beppu service resilience from October can make a Beppu final night easier, but it does not erase Yufuin dinner deadlines, Hita’s corridor position or the cost of another hotel move.

Why

Fukuoka in → Beppu / Oita / east Kyushu out

Hita → Yufuin N1 → Beppu N2

Hita sits naturally on the Fukuoka side; Beppu becomes the flexible exit base

Fukuoka in → Fukuoka out

Beppu N1 → Yufuin N2 → Hita → Fukuoka

Yufuin and Hita sit naturally on the return corridor

Only hard edge is Oita Airport

Do not let the airport choose the hotel order

Oita Airport currently publishes about 53 minutes from JR Beppu Station and about 55 minutes nonstop from JR Yufuin Station

Late arrival into Fukuoka

Sleep Fukuoka first and delete Hita

Protecting the Yufuin ryokan is more valuable than forcing a rushed heritage stop

Family / older travellers / several large bags

Consider two nights in one base

One fewer checkout and luggage transfer can be worth more than sleeping in both onsen towns

Put Yufuin where its fragile hours are protected

Yufuin is the least flexible accommodation night. A half-board ryokan is a timed product: check-in, dinner, pickup, private bathing and the quiet morning are often worth more than another daytime attraction. Arriving after the useful dinner window and leaving before breakfast can destroy the value of an expensive stay even if the transport itself technically works.

That is why I would normally protect Yufuin from a late Day 1 arrival. Hita is the first element to delete when the inbound flight, rain, luggage or a delay compresses the day. The route does not fail because Hita disappears; it fails when a secondary stop is kept after it begins threatening the most time-sensitive booking.

If Yufuin is the main paid experience, aim to arrive with enough time to settle in before dinner and avoid an aggressive early checkout the next morning. Use the Yufuin private-onsen ryokan guide to distinguish an in-room bath from a reservable family bath or a paid private bath.

Hita belongs on the Fukuoka side of the route

The Kyudai Main Line / Yufu corridor links Hakata, Hita and Yufuin. That makes Hita a logical stop on whichever side of the itinerary is moving to or from Fukuoka. It does not need to be Day 1 by default.

If the trip finishes in Fukuoka, Beppu → Yufuin → Hita → Fukuoka can be cleaner than forcing Hita into the inbound day. If the trip continues east from Beppu, Fukuoka → Hita → Yufuin → Beppu usually makes more geographic sense.

Give Hita only the time it earns. Mameda-machi can work as a two-to-four-hour stop; it does not need a hotel on such a short trip. Large luggage changes the answer. Forward the main case when the receiving hotel and carrier support it, or use confirmed storage and carry a day bag. A route that looks elegant on a rail map becomes poor value if the suitcase controls every street.

Beppu is the flexible night—but the bus timetable is changing in autumn 2026

Beppu can absorb more kinds of trip failure than Yufuin. A station hotel tolerates a late arrival, Kitahama supports highway-bus movement, Kannawa serves the Hells and steam streets, and resort hotels can make bad weather useful. That flexibility is the real reason to put Beppu last on an eastbound itinerary.

Until the end of September 2026, do not assume the same Fukuoka–Beppu service pattern will continue into October. Nishitetsu’s current route page explicitly announces a October 1, 2026 Beppu-line timetable revision with additional services and changed departure times. For travel on or after that date, the article’s older “10 round trips” planning figure is obsolete as a fixed decision input.

The correct inference is modest: a denser Beppu–Fukuoka schedule can reduce the penalty of sleeping in Beppu before returning west. It does not automatically make Beppu the better final night. If Yufuin is already the better experience, or the hotel move exists only to catch a marginally more frequent bus, keep the itinerary simple.

September 1 and October 1 create two different timetable boundaries

There are two separate Nishitetsu changes:

  • September 1, 2026: the Fukuoka / Fukuoka Airport–Oita line gets a timetable revision including more airport-pattern services, and its fare is revised.

  • October 1, 2026: the Fukuoka / Fukuoka Airport–Beppu line gets another timetable revision with additional services and changed times.

This matters because “Toyonokuni-go” can be used loosely by travellers to describe both Oita- and Beppu-side journeys. Do not carry a price or departure time from the Oita timetable into the Beppu trip, and do not assume an August screenshot remains valid after October 1.

ValueNavi date rule: if your travel date is within a week of a published timetable revision, plan the hotel order from stable geography first, then plug in the new live departure. Do not reverse the whole itinerary because of a service that has not yet started.

Route A: Fukuoka → Hita → Yufuin → Beppu

Choose this when Beppu genuinely has the final job. Day 1 uses Hita as a corridor stop, Night 1 protects the ryokan, and Night 2 becomes the flexible eastern-side base.

On Day 2, use the Yufuin morning before moving. Eat the breakfast you paid for, bathe again and take the quieter early walk. Kamenoi Bus currently operates a temporary direct Beppu Station → Yufuin bus at 09:30 through September 30, 2026, but the operator warns that it can fill and points travellers to Route 36 / Yufurin alternatives. Treat that temporary bus as a convenience, not the only working plan.

On Day 3, Beppu can support rail, highway bus, Oita city, Oita Airport or another eastern-Kyushu move. If the only onward edge is Oita Airport, red-team the hotel change: the airport currently lists roughly 53 minutes from JR Beppu Station and 55 minutes nonstop from JR Yufuin Station. Two published minutes do not justify repacking.

Route B: Fukuoka → Beppu → Yufuin → Hita → Fukuoka

Choose this when the trip must return to Fukuoka and you still want both onsen towns. Beppu takes the flexible first night. Yufuin takes the protected second night. Hita then sits on the corridor back to Fukuoka rather than becoming an inbound detour.

For travel on or after October 1, the revised Beppu–Fukuoka timetable may make a direct Beppu return more resilient than it was under the pre-October pattern. That can weaken the case for reversing the route solely for bus frequency. The reverse route should still be chosen because Yufuin/Hita fit the final corridor and the ryokan timing works—not because an old timetable says Beppu has fewer buses.

If Hita begins threatening the final reserved connection, delete it. Fukuoka airport / Shinkansen / hotel check-in is a hard edge; a heritage stop is not.

One hotel for two nights can still beat the perfect-looking split

Families, older travellers and groups with large luggage should not treat one night in each town as mandatory. Two nights in Beppu can be more rational when avoiding repacking matters more than Yufuin’s quiet evening. Visit Yufuin during the day and accept the trade-off.

The reverse—two nights in Yufuin with Beppu as a day trip—only works when the ryokan or Yufuin morning/evening experience is clearly worth more than Beppu’s transport flexibility.

Split-stay test: each hotel night should buy a different scarce time window. If both nights are merely beds in two towns, the move has not earned its place.

Train, highway bus or car: let the route choose the mode

JR is strong when the route uses the Hakata–Hita–Yufuin corridor and reserved limited-express services fit the day. Highway buses are useful when Tenjin or Fukuoka Airport is the true endpoint and underfloor luggage storage removes a transfer. A car gets stronger for several travellers, remote ryokan or additional mountain stops.

Do not buy the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass first and then force the itinerary to recover its price. Build the actual sectors first, then test the pass in the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass break-even guide.

Likewise, do not infer that every Yufuin no Mori runs through to Beppu. JR Kyushu service patterns differ by train; selected services extend farther while others terminate earlier. Verify the exact train number before using a through-service as the backbone of a hotel change.

Final verdict

Eastbound trip: Hita → Yufuin Night 1 → Beppu Night 2 remains the best starting framework because it protects the ryokan and leaves flexibility last.

Return-to-Fukuoka trip: Beppu Night 1 → Yufuin Night 2 → Hita → Fukuoka is often cleaner, but do not justify it using a frozen pre-October Beppu bus count. Nishitetsu changes the Beppu-line timetable on October 1, 2026.

Oita Airport only: do not move hotels for a roughly two-minute published airport-bus difference.

Compressed or luggage-heavy trip: delete Hita first, or use one stable hotel for two nights.

The route should survive timetable changes because its logic comes from geography, fragile ryokan hours and luggage—not one August screenshot.
