Choose The Orion Hotel Motobu when the northern-Okinawa stay is built around Churaumi Aquarium, Bise and Emerald Beach and you want to move between the hotel and those sights without treating every outing as a car trip. Choose Ala Mahaina when the room itself needs to function like a two- or three-night base: four-person space, a real kitchen, in-room meals and more time living in the room. For a family of four, the key comparison is not 50 m² versus 64 m². It is Orion’s 7-minute walk to Churaumi versus Ala Mahaina’s extra 13.88 m² and full kitchen.
That trade-off gets sharper with trip length. On a one-night aquarium stop, Orion’s location usually does more work than Ala Mahaina’s kitchen. On a three-night stay, the kitchen and larger Deluxe Room can be used repeatedly enough to reverse the answer.

The cleanest comparison is Churaumi return windows versus room-hours
The Orion’s official site places Churaumi Aquarium about seven minutes away on foot, Bise Fukugi Tree Road about three minutes away and the entrance to Emerald Beach about two minutes away. That creates several useful hotel-return windows: a child can nap after the aquarium, wet clothes can go back to the room, and one adult can return without moving the car.
Ala Mahaina’s official site describes Churaumi as about five minutes away by car. It also points guests to a shuttle from the adjacent Hotel Mahaina to Ocean Expo Park. That is still close, but it is a different routine. A five-minute drive requires loading the family, parking or using the shuttle schedule. It is not equivalent to a seven-minute walk from the hotel.
This is why the answer is strongest for a one-night stop. If the room is mostly used for sleep, Orion’s location contributes on the exact day you came to Motobu. Ala Mahaina’s larger room and kitchen become more valuable only when you create enough room-hours to use them.
For four guests, 50 m² and 63.88 m² are not the whole story
The Orion’s current Ocean Deluxe is 50 m² and sleeps up to four. It has two permanent 120 × 206 cm beds; when three or four guests use the room, the sofas are converted into up to two 90 × 190 cm beds. That is a perfectly usable family setup, but the third and fourth sleeping positions also change how the room functions during the evening.
Ala Mahaina’s current Deluxe Room is 63.88 m² with capacity for four. Every Ala Mahaina room also has a kitchen with an IH cooktop, microwave, kettle, cookware, cutting board and utensils. The extra published area over Orion Ocean Deluxe is 13.88 m², or about 28% more.
That 28% should not automatically win. If everyone leaves after breakfast and returns only to sleep, much of the extra area is unused. If one child naps, another adult cooks a simple meal, luggage stays open and the family spends several hours in the room each day, the same 13.88 m² becomes operational space rather than brochure space.
Use this test: how many awake hours will four people spend in the room? Fewer than two per day favours location. Four or five per day makes room layout much more important.
Ala Mahaina’s kitchen only has value if it replaces a real restaurant problem
“Kitchen included” sounds automatically valuable for families, but it should be counted only when you will use it. Ala Mahaina’s full kitchen can solve three concrete problems: breakfast before an early start, a simple child-friendly dinner when everyone is tired, and dietary or allergy control that would otherwise require another restaurant decision.
It is much less valuable if the family wants hotel breakfast every morning and restaurant dinner every night. Ala Mahaina already operates its own breakfast and dinner restaurant, and Hanasaki Marche is part of the wider complex. In that itinerary, the kitchen becomes unused floor-area equipment.
For two adults on a one-night romantic stop, I would not choose Ala Mahaina simply because it has a kitchen. For four people staying three nights with a supermarket stop and at least two in-room meals, I would count it as a genuine cost-saving and fatigue-saving feature.
Pool season can reverse the answer without changing the room price
The Orion currently operates an indoor pool year-round, with published hours of 09:00–19:00, in addition to seasonal outdoor facilities. Ala Mahaina’s infinity pool is currently scheduled from April 1 to October 31, 2026.
That makes a winter “hotel with a pool” search misleading. The two hotels are not selling the same pool product in January or February. If swimming is a promised activity for children on a winter trip, Orion has a hard advantage. If the trip is in July and the group wants a resort-style outdoor infinity pool, Ala Mahaina’s seasonal limitation is irrelevant.
A bad-weather day can also favour Orion because the indoor pool remains usable when an outdoor pool does not. This matters more on a two-night stay than a one-night stay because there is enough hotel time for a weather fallback to be used.
Parking is now paid at both hotels, but the charging structure differs
Older comparisons that describe one or both properties as simply “free parking” are outdated. The Orion introduced guest parking charges in October 2024 and currently lists JPY 1,000 per passenger car per stay, subject to plan conditions.
Ala Mahaina currently charges JPY 1,000 per passenger car per night, capped at JPY 2,000, for applicable reservations; its current rules say no parking fee applies from the third night onward. Therefore:
one night: both can be JPY 1,000 under the standard published structure;
two nights: Orion remains JPY 1,000 per stay while Ala Mahaina reaches JPY 2,000;
three or more nights: Ala Mahaina’s published cap prevents the gap from continuing to grow.
The JPY 1,000 difference over two nights is not enough to decide a resort stay by itself, but it is exactly the type of hidden cost that should be included when two room rates look close.
One night: Orion usually wins because you cannot use enough of Ala Mahaina
A typical one-night Motobu stop is arrival in the afternoon, Churaumi or Bise, dinner, sleep, then departure the next day. In that schedule the room may only receive two or three awake hours.
I would therefore choose Orion for most one-night first visits unless Ala Mahaina is materially cheaper for the exact room. The aquarium walk, beach and Bise proximity are benefits you can use immediately; the larger condo layout and kitchen have too little time to repay their premium.
The exception is a four-person family whose Ala Mahaina Deluxe rate is similar to an Orion four-person room and who strongly values proper separation between cooking, luggage and sleeping space. Then the room itself can become the one-night reason.
Two nights: count how often you expect to come back to the hotel
Two nights are where this comparison becomes balanced. The hotel is no longer just beside an attraction; it is a base.
Choose Orion if the plan looks like: aquarium → room break → Bise → hotel → Emerald Beach / pool → another short local outing. The value comes from multiple low-friction returns.
Choose Ala Mahaina if the plan looks like: long northern-Okinawa drives → return with groceries → family eats or rests in the room → luggage and beach gear spread out → slower morning. The value comes from fewer reasons to leave the room once you return.
A useful decision metric is the number of hotel-return events. Orion wins when you expect two or more short returns during the day. Ala Mahaina wins when you expect one long return each evening and will stay in.
Three nights: Ala Mahaina gets stronger, but only if Motobu deserves three nights
By night three, Ala Mahaina’s long-stay design is much easier to justify. Kitchen use repeats, luggage no longer needs to be compressed daily, and the extra space becomes meaningful.
But first red-team the destination itself. If the wider trip still needs Naha, Onna, the south or an early airport departure, three Motobu nights can create more driving than either hotel solves. Do not choose the better long-stay room before proving that Motobu is the correct long-stay base.

Final verdict: pay for the constraint you will use every day
The Orion is the better default for a short first Churaumi stay because its seven-minute aquarium walk, Bise access, Emerald Beach proximity and year-round indoor pool are benefits you can use immediately. Ala Mahaina becomes the stronger choice as the party and stay get larger: its 63.88 m² four-person Deluxe Room, full kitchen and long-stay design can remove repeated meal, luggage and room-circulation friction over two or three nights.
The answer reverses when the supposed advantage is not used. Do not pay Ala Mahaina’s long-stay premium for one night with no cooking. Do not pay Orion’s location premium if every day leaves Motobu by car at 08:00 and returns at 21:00. The best hotel is the one whose advantage repeats during the hours you are actually there.
