For a first five-day Okinawa trip, use two bases rather than five long drives from Naha: start with a car-free Naha day, collect the rental car on Day 2, move to Onna or Nago, give one day to a marine activity and one day to Churaumi–Bise–Kouri, then let the flight control the final day. The biggest trade-off is hotel simplicity versus repeated driving. One Naha base is easy to book but wastes more daylight; changing hotels every night saves little and creates luggage friction.
If the car decision itself is not settled, start with Do You Need a Car in Okinawa? and the Naha 2-day no-car itinerary. This page assumes a road trip becomes useful from Day 2 onward.
Okinawa 5-day itinerary: the 30-second route
↔ Scroll table left or right
Day | Main job | What not to add |
1 | Naha without a car | Airport rental + long north drive |
2 | Collect car + west coast + move to Onna/Nago | Timed marine booking immediately after pickup |
3 | Blue Cave or one weather-safe substitute | A second distant headline attraction |
4 | Churaumi + Bise + Kouri if conditions suit | Every northern cape and beach |
5 | South or airport return, depending on flight | Another cross-island loop |
Day 1: keep Naha car-free
Use Yui Rail and walking for Shuri, Makishi, Tsuboya and Kokusai Street, then sleep before the first longer drive. This avoids paying for a rental car while it sits in a city car park and protects the trip from a delayed arrival. If dinner is already becoming a route problem, use the Okinawa food guide rather than crossing town for every famous dish.
Day 2: collect the car after breakfast and move north slowly
Photograph the vehicle, confirm insurance and NOC, then make the first hour deliberately simple. Chatan, Yomitan, Zakimi or Cape Manzamo can fit before hotel check-in. Do not place a non-refundable 10:00 marine activity immediately after a rental pickup whose shuttle and counter time can vary. The Okinawa car-rental guide covers the branch, document and protection details.
Choose Onna when Blue Cave, resort time and central-west-coast dinners matter. Choose Nago when Churaumi and Kouri are the stronger priorities. If the northern hotel is already the key purchase, compare The Orion Hotel Motobu vs Ala Mahaina; for a resort-led Onna stay, use the HIYORI Ocean Resort guide
Compare the same rental plan after fixing Day 2 and Day 5
Use the same branch pair, times, vehicle class, child seats, ETC and protection level on every booking page. A low compact-car headline rate is not comparable with a larger vehicle that already includes more protection or extras.

Day 3: let one marine activity own the morning
Use snorkeling or discovery diving as the main event, then leave the afternoon for lunch, the hotel or one nearby stop. If the sea is unsuitable, accept the operator decision and move to a land-based backup. The Blue Cave guide and the Okinawa rainy-day and typhoon guide cover those two branches.
Pair this with
If the sea day is still open, pair this route with the Kerama Islands day-trip guide and the Kerama discovery-diving guide. If the group prefers a land-based outdoor day, compare the Okinawa cycling routes
Day 4: Churaumi, Bise and Kouri already fill the northern day
Start early for Churaumi Aquarium, use Bise Fukugi Tree Road as the slower second stop, eat in Motobu or Nago, then add Kouri only if wind, daylight and energy remain good. Do not stack every northern cape into the same day. The return drive is part of the schedule, not empty time after sightseeing.
Families should shorten the day earlier rather than later; use the Okinawa family road-trip guide when naps and child-seat time are the real constraint. If mobile data is the weak point, prepare the Okinawa eSIM guide
Day 5: let the flight choose south Okinawa or a simple return
With a late flight and a hotel already nearer Naha, use one southern stop such as Okinawa World or Senagajima. With an early flight, breakfast, fuel and return are enough. Plan backward from airport check-in and include rental inspection, shuttle and luggage transfer. If the final night has moved back to Naha, compare HOTEL COLLECTIVE Naha with the airport-oriented alternative rather than adding a third hotel automatically.
Two hotel bases are usually enough
The simplest four-night structure is one night in Naha plus three nights in Onna or Nago. Add a final Naha night only when an early flight or city evening clearly earns the third hotel move. Once the split is fixed, compare current availability rather than browsing the entire prefecture.

When this five-day route is the wrong Okinawa trip
If the trip’s real priority is a smaller island and water activities rather than mainland road-tripping, compare the Miyakojima 4-day itinerary and the Ishigaki–Taketomi–Iriomote plan before forcing both mainland Okinawa and an outer island into the same five days.
Final verdict: five days need different roles, not five identical drives
Keep Day 1 car-free in Naha, move north on Day 2, give Day 3 to one marine activity, reserve Day 4 for Churaumi and Kouri, and let the flight control Day 5. Two hotel bases and one major purpose per day create more usable time than a single Naha hotel or a new checkout every morning.
