A Sounkyo Kurodake two-day itinerary is most useful when one overnight protects the trip from the long Asahikawa transfer, mountain wind, chairlift uncertainty and fixed ryokan meal times. Use day one for luggage, the gorge, waterfalls and onsen. On day two, decide between the fifth station, the seventh-station chairlift or a complete mountain cancellation only after checking the official live camera and operating status.
Sounkyo Kurodake 2 day itinerary: who should stay one night in Sounkyo?
One night is enough for the ropeway, fifth-station views, lower-gorge sightseeing and an onsen stay. The open chairlift can also fit, but travellers must accept wind chill, moving-seat loading and same-day suspension. A summit hike, Ginsendai, Asahidake or a traverse requires another mountain day. Older travellers, families without hiking footwear, people with vertigo or anyone with balance difficulty should treat the fifth station as a valid endpoint rather than forcing the chairlift because a combination ticket was purchased.
Official 2026 ropeway, chairlift and fare information
The Kurodake Ropeway rises from roughly 670 metres in Sounkyo to about 1,300 metres at the fifth station in approximately seven minutes and normally departs about every 20 minutes. Published 2026 hours are 06:00–18:00 from June 27 to September 30, 07:00–17:00 from October 1–15, and 08:00–16:00 from October 16 to November 8. November 9–30 is listed for maintenance closure. The final uphill cabin is generally 40 minutes before closing. The current adult fare is ¥3,000 return or ¥1,800 one way.
The open summer chairlift continues from near the fifth station to the seventh station in about 15 minutes. Published 2026 hours cover June 27–September 30 from 06:30–17:30 and October 1–15 from 07:30–16:30, with the final uphill ride 30 minutes before closing. The adult return fare is ¥1,200 and the ropeway-plus-chairlift return ticket ¥3,900. Do not assume chairlift operation after October 15.
Recheck the exact travel day because wind, lightning, early snow, ice, maintenance and safety inspections can change operations immediately. The official page provides operating status, wind information, parking and live-camera views. Those mountain observations are more useful than the general Asahikawa city forecast.
Day 1: Asahikawa, check-in, waterfalls and the lower gorge
The official planning time for the Dohoku Bus from Asahikawa to Sounkyo is about 110 minutes, and a JR Pass does not cover this local bus. Check the current Kamikawa–Sounkyo timetable because departures are limited. An early bus allows waterfalls and a gorge walk; an arrival after midday should focus on luggage storage, dinner confirmation and one nearby attraction.
Ginga and Ryusei Falls are most practical by car or taxi. Do not assume a useful scheduled bus every day. Roadside viewpoints are easier, while the paired-falls viewpoint adds an uphill walk. Momijidani begins roughly 15 minutes from the onsen town and its approximately 700-metre one-way route still requires a trail, weather and bear-notice check. After a 15:00 arrival, use the visitor centre, onsen town and one short walk rather than racing to every viewpoint.
Many properties operate on half board and commonly start dinner around 18:00. Before paying, obtain written confirmation of final check-in, dinner handling after a delay, shuttle arrangements, lift access and the exact room type. Set a hard return to the hotel 60–90 minutes before dinner even when a waterfall remains unseen.
Day 2: ropeway only, chairlift, or summit hike
The 06:00 September ropeway and 07:00 early-October opening can conflict directly with hotel breakfast. Ask while booking whether the meal can be packed, delayed or forfeited. A ropeway-only visit requires roughly 90–120 minutes for queues, the fifth-station viewpoint, a short circuit and photography. Use the fifth-station toilet before considering the chairlift.
Ropeway plus chairlift requires about 2.5–3.5 hours after the walk to the lift, loading, both chairlift rides, seventh-station time and changing wind. The seventh station does not offer a toilet that ordinary visitors should depend on. Wind chill, vertigo and boarding a moving chair must be evaluated separately from the enclosed ropeway. If the chairlift is suspended but the ropeway operates, the fifth station remains a complete sightseeing product.
The summit route continues from the seventh station toward approximately 1,984 metres and commonly needs 90–120 minutes uphill before delays from wet roots, frost, mud, early snow or crowds. It is suitable only with hiking footwear, waterproof warmth, water, food, a headlamp, offline map, first aid and bear precautions. Day two then becomes a pure hiking day with no waterfall, Ginsendai or long intercity extension.
Protect the return to Asahikawa
After descending, return to the hotel for luggage and lunch before an afternoon bus. Keep at least one later bus as backup instead of placing ropeway queues, luggage collection and departure against each other. Use an earlier descent when connecting to Asahikawa Airport, Sapporo or a fixed evening reservation. A low-frequency mountain bus should not be attached to an international flight on the same day.
Sounkyo or Asahikawa hotel base?
Stay in Sounkyo when Kurodake is the main purpose: use the opening ropeway, decide from the morning camera, bathe at night and remove one Asahikawa round trip. The cost is limited inventory, fewer independent restaurants and fixed dinner. Asahikawa is stronger for city dining, laundry, a late flight, car rental and switching to Biei or Asahidake after poor weather. A fifth-station-only visit can be a day trip; the chairlift, morning light or summit hike benefits from an overnight.
Five accommodation profiles
Yumoto Ginsenkaku is close to the ropeway and suits car-free or early-start travellers. Hotel Taisetsu ONSEN & CANYON RESORT is an onsen-led stay, but its hillside position requires a shuttle check. Sounkaku Mountain Resort 1923 suits families and buffet travellers but can create a 07:00 breakfast conflict. Choyo Resort Hotel is a family and parking backup. Sounkyo Hostel serves budget or solo travellers rather than replacing a full onsen resort. These examples describe location and product type, not live room availability.
International booking, luggage and driving
Ask the property to confirm in writing the room type, meal time, final arrival, shuttle, card acceptance, cancellation time zone and whether English support is available. Leave the main case at the same Asahikawa hotel or forward it to the city after Sounkyo and carry one overnight bag; next-day mountain delivery is not guaranteed. Car-free travel works through the Asahikawa or Kamikawa bus, while a taxi or rental mainly improves waterfall access. Driving adds mountain weather, darkness, parking, right-hand-drive experience, winter tyres and insurance rather than eliminating risk.
Suspension, early snow, fog and bear recovery
Ropeway suspended: use the visitor centre, onsen town and conservative lower-gorge sites. Chairlift suspended: retain the fifth station. Heavy rain, fog or strong wind: remove the seventh station and summit. Early snow or ice: travellers without winter-mountain skills remain in town. Bear notices and trail closures are absolute. Ginsendai, Asahidake and Kurodake are separate mountain days; a two-day itinerary should choose one main line.
