For an autumn trip through Japan, the best eSIM setup is not the one that promises the most data. It is the one that leaves your transport and tickets usable when the phone loses signal, the battery dies or the group separates. Mountain valleys, ropeways, rural buses and peak-season route changes create a different risk from an ordinary Tokyo city trip. Build three independent layers: connectivity for live changes, ticket media that you understand before reaching the gate, and an offline route pack that does not depend on Google Maps finding a transit route in real time.
The most important correction is that “download Google Maps and screenshot the QR codes” is not a complete backup. Google officially states that offline maps do not provide public-transport or walking directions. And digital tickets do not all behave the same way: some tickets can be printed or stored as a static QR, some require a live account/app flow, and some rail products are actually entered with a linked IC card rather than by showing the reservation on your phone.

Start by classifying the ticket — not by saving a screenshot
“Digital ticket” is too broad to be useful. Before departure, put every important ticket into one of four categories.
1. Physical or IC-linked entry
This is the strongest category when connectivity fails because the gate interaction may not require you to open the booking page at all. For example, JR East’s current Express Train e-ticket guidance explains that the limited-express product is ticketless but the passenger still enters the gate with a transportation IC card or physical basic-fare ticket. The reservation exists online; the gate medium is something else.
The planning lesson is important: write down what you actually touch at the gate. If the answer is Suica/PASMO/another registered IC card, protect that card and do not waste the station approach searching for a QR code that is not the boarding medium.
2. Static or officially printable QR
Some operators explicitly provide a print option. JRE MALL Ticket, for example, tells users of applicable QR tickets that a printable page can be used when reception is weak, battery failure is a concern or tickets need to be shared across a group.
When the operator itself offers a printable QR, use that feature rather than inventing your own backup. A PDF or paper copy can turn a battery problem from a trip failure into a minor inconvenience.
3. In-app or account-dependent ticket

If the official instructions tell you to open the account, display the ticket and perform an in-app action, treat the app session as part of the ticket. Saving the confirmation email is still useful, but it may not be the boarding or admission medium.
Do not assume a screenshot is valid unless the operator says it is. Some systems change the on-screen state after use, require a live login or use anti-fraud behaviour that a static image cannot reproduce. The correct backup is the operator’s published offline/print procedure—or a physical alternative if one exists.
4. Reservation confirmation only
A booking email, seat number or reservation reference may prove what you purchased without itself opening the gate. Save it anyway. If the phone/app fails, the reference number plus passport/name can make staff-assisted recovery much easier than saying only “the ticket was on my phone.”
Offline Google Maps does not solve a rural transit day
Google’s current help page is explicit: after you download an area, offline maps can provide driving navigation when the whole route sits inside the downloaded map, but public-transport, cycling and walking directions are unavailable offline. Offline driving also loses traffic information and alternative routes.
That matters much more in autumn mountain travel than in central Tokyo. A downloaded map can show where the bus stop is. It cannot reliably tell you, while offline, which rural bus still runs at 16:42, whether the seasonal service has ended or how to rebuild a missed connection.
Your offline pack should therefore contain the transport information Google cannot recreate:
the operator’s current timetable or PDF for the outbound and return journey;
the Japanese name of the station/bus stop and the stop number when published;
the final two acceptable return services, not only the last one;
hotel name, Japanese address and telephone number;
one low-risk fallback: earlier bus, taxi number, lower trail or return-to-base route.
This is the difference between an offline map and an offline travel plan.

The eSIM should protect live decisions, not carry the whole trip
Use mobile data for things that genuinely require live information: weather radar, ropeway or road status, same-day bus changes, hotel messages, seat changes and navigation after the route changes. Do not spend the connectivity layer re-downloading information that could have been saved under hotel Wi-Fi.

The useful rule for autumn travel is data for change; offline copies for the plan you already know.
Two travellers should not have one phone as the single point of failure
A single large-data eSIM plus hotspot can look efficient for a couple. It becomes fragile when the person carrying that phone enters a different toilet queue, takes a different train car, loses battery or walks ahead on a trail.

For families, put the critical information on at least two devices. One parent should not hold all four QR tickets, the only hotel address and the only working data line if the group can split during station crowds.
Use a three-copy rule for the information that can strand you
For a mountain bus, reserved train or remote ryokan, I would keep three copies of the minimum recovery information:
Live copy: official app/site or booking account.
Offline phone copy: downloaded PDF, saved confirmation, note or operator-approved ticket file.
Independent copy: second phone or paper for the items whose loss would strand the group.
This does not mean printing every restaurant booking. Apply it only to high-cost failures: last rural bus, timed ropeway connection, reserved intercity train, hotel pickup, airport transfer and tickets whose replacement process is unclear.
Battery planning: protect the phone that controls the next decision

Camera use, navigation and weak-signal searching can all consume battery during a long outdoor day. The simplest fix is behavioural: do not make the phone perform every non-essential task on mobile data.
Download maps and operator PDFs under Wi-Fi.
Move photo/video cloud backup to hotel Wi-Fi.
Keep the power bank accessible rather than buried in the main suitcase.
If one phone holds the required ticket, give that phone priority over entertainment and hotspot duty.
If the operator offers an approved printable ticket, print the high-risk one instead of assuming battery will be fine.
A 20,000 mAh battery does not fix a ticket stored only behind a login you cannot access. Battery redundancy and ticket-media redundancy are separate problems.
Arrival day: do not activate the whole system while walking toward the last train

For a late flight, airport Wi-Fi should be the setup environment, not the moment you discover the phone is carrier-locked or the QR profile has been deleted. The first transport decision is already time-sensitive; do not add avoidable telecom troubleshooting to it.
Autumn-specific failure mode: the route changes after you saved everything
Offline preparation protects a known plan. Autumn weather and operations can invalidate that plan after the files were saved. Wind can stop a ropeway, rain can change a trail decision, a volcano warning can close an area and foliage timing can move the destination priority.
That is why one data connection still matters. Before entering the weak-signal corridor, use your last strong connection to refresh:
weather and wind;
operator disruption notices;
ropeway/road/trail status;
the final return timetable;
the hotel’s latest pickup instructions.
Then switch back to the offline pack. Mobile data should confirm the plan at the edge of the corridor, not be the only thing holding the plan together inside it.

Do not overbuy data to solve a coverage problem
A 50GB or unlimited plan does not improve a place where the partner network is weak. If the trip is mostly city navigation, tickets and messaging, a moderate fixed-data plan may be completely sufficient. If the trip includes laptop hotspot use, live video or heavy cloud upload, data allowance becomes more important—but coverage and fallback still remain separate questions.

Final verdict: the eSIM is the live layer, not the foundation
Build the trip so that losing mobile data is inconvenient rather than catastrophic. Know the exact ticket medium. Save rural timetables separately from offline maps. Put critical information on two devices or paper. Give each adult enough connectivity to recover independently when the group separates. Use mobile data for live changes and operator status, not as the only storage location for a route you could have saved yesterday.
If one dead phone would make you unable to board the train, find the hotel and identify the last bus, the problem is not that your eSIM is too small. The travel system has too many single points of failure.
